Bikkuriman World  Hudson Soft (Westone;Hudson Soft)1987
[52]***The game is basically the same as Sega's 'Wonderboy in Monsterland', but the PC-Engine version features characters from an anime TV-Series titled 'Bikkuriman'. Otherwise its a 100% perfect conversion of the Arcade original.

China Warrior  Hudson Soft1987
[70]***
[100]***
[83]***
[1]***Yes, the game looks spectacular... at first. The characters are very large and detailed. But too bad that the movements are not very fluent. Gameplay consists of fighting your way through myriads of enemies (which lack in variety). I think this game was some kind of early 'graphics over gameplay' game, with the main purpose of showing the superior graphics of a PC-Engine in contrast to other 8-bit systems of that time.***China Warrior is a side-scrolling action game that was released around the same time as the TurboGrafx16 in Japan. It's up to the kung fu master Wang to defeat the Dark Emperor, who stands atop the kung fu world in China. Punch, kick and jump-kick enemies along the path that lies between you and the three bosses of each stage. Skillfully fight your way through all four stages, and be sure not to miss recovery items while dodging enemy attacks. China Warrior boasts character size and detail that rivaled all other games at the time of its release. Exciting one-on-one fights against the game's realistic bosses will make you feel like you're in the middle of a kung fu movie.

Kato-chan & Ken-chan  Hudson Soft1987
[33]***
[49]***
[4]***A platform game which is kinda infamous because of its bizarre humor. Gameplay reminded me a lot of the original 'Wonderboy'. The game becomes very difficult soon because without precise jumps you won't stand a chance and fall down one of the numerous pits. And when you don't constantly collect fruits your life bar will decrease slowly but steadily.***This comical action game features two bungling detectives, J.J. and JEFF, as they travel through a total of six fields. One day, a request comes into their office to take a case that requires them to "rescue a wealthy man who's been kidnapped." Choose between the two characters and set off alone to outwit your partner and save the day. Each field is broken down into four areas, where enemies, as well as your partner, will try to keep you from your goal. There are many items throughout each area. Kick around in various locations to make them appear. Jump and spray-paint your way toward your goal. If you find a hidden room, you can regain health while being completely entertained by its short sketch and surreal allure.

R-Type  Hudson Soft;Irem (Irem)1988
[30]***The PC-Engine version of R-Type was released in Japan on two different HuCards. The first one contained only the first four stages, while the second one (R-Type Part 2) contained stages 5-8. The US-release of R-Type contained all stages. The game itself is an excellent arcade port with high playability and was the PC-Engine's first 'killer application'.

R-Type Part 2  Hudson Soft;Irem1988
[30]***
[1]***The PC-Engine version of R-Type was released in Japan on two different HuCards. The first one contained only the first four stages, while the second one (R-Type Part 2) contained stages 5-8. The US-release of R-Type contained all stages.
The last four levels are much harder than the first and thus only die-hard shoot'm up fans will really enjoy this 'part' of the game.

Alien Crush  Naxat (Compile)1988A very good pinball game with an interesting concept and a nice 'Aliens' setting. Play controls and ball movements are excellent.***
[1]***Alien Crush is a fan-favorite pinball game that features a sinister sci-fi theme. Play through a two-level playing field that comes to life with pulsating alien creatures. Rack up a high enough score, clear the board of these extraterrestrials and discover secret bonus stages. The game features realistic pinball action, complete with a tilt function and two selectable soundtracks. Do you have what it takes to fight back against this alien infestation?***The first pinball game for the PC Engine, and one of the first on console and finally the first pinball which wasn't a simulation of a real pinball machine, but a pinball setting in a strange alien world.
You must hit targets, make ramps and so on like in any other pinball game, but here the goal is to open hidden worlds to destroy many more hostile aliens.
Very original and innovative !

Legendary Axe  Victor (Aicom)1988
[142]***
[70]***
[70]***You are Gogan, a muscular powerhouse with enough guts to enter the Pits of Madness. Your mission: rescue the beautiful red-haired Flare. You are strong, but you also have Sting, a sacred axe to help you battle strange creatures and Jagu's savage cult - through mountain, jungle and cave. Increase Sting's power, unlock hidden levels, win extra lives and rescue Flare. If you don't, who will?***This game is one of the best early PC-Engine games. Good graphics and a brilliant soundtrack make this game shine. Gameplay isn't less polished and although it's difficult it stays fair.***

Fantasy Zone  NEC Avenue1988This game is a perfect example of an excellent PC-Engine arcade port. The graphics are very colorful and true to the arcade version. The controls are also flawless. 'Fantasy Zone' itself however isn't a second 'R-Type'. Just a good port of an above average game.***

Space Harrier  NEC Avenue (Dempa)1988The arcade hit Space Harrier comes home on TurboGrafx-16! Evil forces have invaded Dragon Land. You, as the fighting Space Harrier must battle and drive out the hostile hordes... armed only with an Autolock Energy Launcher and your wits. Devastate the enemy and save Dragon Land. This arcade classic provides 18 different levels of challenge and shoothing thrills. Are your skills up to it?***

[62]***A good arcade port and plays even better than 'Space Harrier 2' for the MegaDrive/Genesis.***

Dragon Spirit  Namco1988Amur, the spirit of the dragon, lives within you. As the winged creature that breathes mega-tons of fire, your mission is revealed. Confront Zowel in a Super Battle of Beasts. (Careful not to breathe on Alicia).***

[62]***
[33]***I remember playing the homecomputer ports of 'Dragon Spirit' and I was utterly disappointed. The PC-Engine version however is different. Still the same game but with much smoother graphics and sound and fantastic playability. It's another of those examples that show the PC-Engine's capability in providing perfect conversions of arcade shooters.***

Vigilante  Irem1989

[83]***
[33]***
[62]***
[1]***A Beat'm Up in best 'Kung Fu' or 'Double Dragon' tradition. A bit too easy and short for my taste (except the final boss which I found to be very hard). The graphics are very beautiful with great backgrounds and detailed sprites. Controls are a bit jerky, especially kick-jumping. Despite its flaws I enjoyed the game.***Brave the streets of New York City in this side-scrolling beat-'em-up game. Thugs kidnap the beloved Madonna, and it's up to players to become vigilantes. Players fight their way into enemy territory to get her back. Enemies attack with weapons like iron pipes, chains, guns and motorcycles. To fight back, players can punch, kick or use the "nunchaku" item that appears in the stage. Players must use each of the attacks effectively to defeat their enemies. To clear a stage, defeat the boss that waits at the end. Players fight their way through exciting stages that include the City Streets, Junkyard, Brooklyn Bridge and the Backstreets.

Son Son II  NEC Avenue (Capcom)1989
[1]***
[52]***
[37]***The sequel of an older arcade game from Capcom. The game has excellent playability, the levels are beautiful and colorful. The difficulty level increases slowly from level to level. The biggest obstacle in later levels is the maze-like design. You have to find keys to open doors etc.

Kaizō Chōjin Schbibin Man  NCS Masaya1989Reviewed as "Overhauled Man".
[1]***Reviewed as "Over Hauled Man 3".
[32]***This is one of the standard anime-ish platform action games. You can choose between a male and female character and have to make your way through several levels which are linked via an overworld map to the fortress of the evil boss enemy. You can even play with 2 players simultaneously. The only interesting thing about this game is the change between day and night levels. Depending on the overworld time you get to make the same stage by day or night. Graphics and sound are only slightly above average and the own characters moved somewhat slowly and sluggish.

P-47: The Freedom Fighter  Aicom (NMK)1989
[62]***
[1]***Another shooter with good playability but which is rather unspectacular and doesn't reach the quality of other early shooting games like R-Type or Gunhed.

Deep Blue: Kaitei Shinwa  Pack-In-Video;NEC Technologies (Pack-in-Video)1989
[33]***You command an A.N.G.E.L. Fish Attack Sub. Your mission: rid the oceans of the evil aliens in their Undersea Palace deep in the ocean depths. On top the water is calm, beautiful. But as you descend toward the Palace, you won't believe your goggles! Scaled creatures snarl. Swarms of mutant fish attack. Power up! Use the Swirl Cutter! Energy Fin full throttle! Fire! Fire! Be John Paul Jones. Or be Davey Jones. Fire!***
[1]***
[52]***
[37]***This game is ultra-hard. From the beginning you are faced against myriads of fast approaching enemies. The person who plays through all the four levels without cheating must be a shooter-god. Suprisingly the bosses are the easiest part of the game! Graphics are below average and the music is quite annoying. There are many really good shooting games for the PC-Engine. This is not one of them.

Kyūkyoku Tiger  Taito (A.I)1989
[33]***
[49]***
[62]***
[1]***
[52]***A great shoot'm up for the PC-Engine and another reason why the PC-Engine was so popular amongst fans of this genre. Great playability and smooth action. Quite difficult though. The game is not very forgiving when it comes to mistakes.

Wonder Momo  Namco1989In this game you play a girl at some kind of theater on a stage. The game has 12 acts. In each of these acts you have to fight enemies with several kicks and jumpkicks. After some time one or two bosses appear which you have to beat in order to reach the next act. When you collect enough "Wonder" power from standard enemies you are able to change into "Wonder Momo". With the new suit and helmet you wear, you can absorb shots and hit harder. I personally found the gameplay much too hectic. Enemies appear too suddenly and the controls didn't feel responsive enough. The graphics are average, the background graphics are very plain (maybe to look like a stage design). Graphics with better quality can only be found in the few cutscenes which appear after a couple of acts. Well, maybe people that have a soft spot for girls in mini-skirts and panty-shots might actually like this game though. labelimageminimize
Pac-Land  Namco1989
[100]***
[33]***
[62]***Pac-Man, the world's most famous game character is back! Help Pac-Man guide the Fairy back to her home in Fairy Land, but watch out - those mischievous ghosts are out to stop you once again! Use the Magic Shoes to help get Pac-Man back to his own home in 16 different rounds with multiple trips in each round, eating Power Pellets and bonus Fruit along the way. Fast, frantic, addictive Pac-Man action from beginning to end!***
[1]***
[37]***This is a very exact conversion of the arcade original. While the game is playable and fun for a while, it shows that it is a game designed in 1984. The backgrounds are not very detailed and the sound extremely cheesy, but they are true to the original. Maybe the best conversion of this game you could play at home. Problem is, that its not impressive for a game released in 1989 and it doesn't have the evergreen status of the classic Pac-Man.
labelimagesubject
Cyber Cross  Face1989Cyber Cross' gameplay reminds me of the original [game=#184]Shinobi[/game] game. Fight your way from left to right through various enemies by kicking or punching them, and sometimes jumping on higher platforms or over pits. After picking up some extra power up you can become a cool Superhero dude wearing a costume which could come from a cheap Power Rangers TV-show. In this superhero form you can wield a sword, throw a boomerang or shoot with a gun (depending on the color of your suit). The graphics are nothing special, but it's fast an has no slowdowns, which adds to the rather good overall playability of the game. labelimageminimize
Jinmu Denshou Yaksa  Big Club (Wolf Team)1989
[103]***
[62]***Reviewed as "Japan Warrior".
[1]***Yaksa was first published as a side-scrolling action game on Japanese homecomputers, so I was surprised to see that the PC-Engine Yaksa became a strange [game=#192]Space Harrier[/game] clone. Well, Space Harrier is a good game and thus even the fact that the whole samurai background just doesn't fit the Space Harrier playstyle, I thought it could be a fun game after all. Man, was I wrong. The game manages to be bad in every aspect. The graphics are plain dull with extremely bad scrolling/scaling, which makes the game unplayable. The music and sound effects hurt the ears. This game would be amongst the "Worst 5" PC-Engine games if you ask me.
labelimageminimize
The Ninja Warriors  Taito1989
[33]***
[62]***With your robotic ninja you have to hack and slash your way through 5 stages filled with hordes of villains to finally meet the endboss. Pretty straightforward gameplay without any surprises. The graphics are average, the background quality varies. The game never reaches the graphical standards of the original arcade version. They also could have implemented more standard enemies, because after some time you will be bored to slay the same types of enemies through all the levels again and again. The games difficulty lies mainly in the nasty time limit and not so much in the enemies, which are quite easy to beat once you understand their simple attack patterns. An overall average game.***Looks like Shinobi with great graphics but such a bad gameplay...
labelimageminimize
Gunhed  Hudson Soft;NEC HE (Compile)1989
[1]***Outstanding fantastic shooter. Plays like a dream. Best example why the PC-Engine was so popular amongst shoot'em up fans.***Blazing Lazers is a vertical-scrolling shooter that was praised for surpassing the limitations of the hardware of its time. Players control the extraordinary firepower of their Gunhed Star Fighter to take on the Dark Squadron that has begun its invasion of Earth. Collect power-ups to increase your ship's battle strength so it can cut through enemies and defeat the bosses in all nine areas. Of course, as part of the "Soldier" series, the game contains a good combination of fast-paced speed with catchy, drum-propelled background music, coupled with the Field Thunder that can be used to destroy enemies in one fell swoop for the ultimate sense of satisfaction. With its fine-tuned difficulty levels, Blazing Lazers is a shooting game that anyone can enjoy.***This is one of the most addictive games ever made. You can keep the rest of the series this is the boy to own.
Having had this game for best part of 10 years I can honestly say I still play it on a regular basis.
A definate purchase job.***This is what NEC's little console does best, fantastic shoot em ups, this has it all, ace graphics thumping soundtracks and long lifespan.
Theres no slow down or no flicker even though theres loads of sprites on screen and the action is relentless, they dont make games like this anymore.

Side Arms: Hyper Dyne  NEC Avenue (Radiance Software)1989
[49]***
[33]***It is light years into the future and there is trouble in your sector. The galaxy is being threatened by an unknown nemesis from a distant black hole and you, Earth's lone, Interstellar Warrior must stop the terrible destruction at hand. Armed only with your government issued sidearm you must use your brains as well as your brawn to avoid ambushes, collect treasures and expand your arsenal of weaponry in preparation for your ultimate battle with the dreaded Nemesis 10.***
[1]***
[52]***An above average shooting game for the PC-Engine/TG-16. Quick reflexes are a must, the game is pretty fast. There are no slowdowns, the overall graphical quality ranges between dull backgrounds and detailed sprites. The music and sound fx are nothing special. On a system like the PC-Engine with so many great arcadestyle shooting games it is hard for this game to compete against the real early classics like "[url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-5433-R+Type]R-Type[/url]" or "[url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-10529-Gunhed]Gunhed[/url]".

[62]***
[33]***
[1]***
[52]***Nice "Run and Gun" game. The levels feature a nice variety of tasks and elements, starting from rescuing hostages, using a raft or motorcycle and so on. The levels are even some kind of story driven - albeit very clichéd - with mini-cutscenes and hostages you can talk to. The music is also quite nice. Negative are the low number of standard enemy types and noticeable slowdowns when there are lots of enemies and projectiles on the screen, which the PC-Engine could handle much better.***Enter alone, deep into enemy territory to rescue the kidnapped President in this overhead-view action shooter. Take on the role of a commando in a Special Forces team and face your enemies with an onslaught of weapons, including machine guns and grenades. Earn valuable information, weapons and items by rescuing POWs. Fight your way to the end of each stage and defeat the boss by effectively using your weapons and equipment. This port of the insanely popular arcade game features refined graphics, story and cut-scenes, making this action game a must-have. This new and enhanced version includes the never-been-told second half of the story that was left out of the arcade version.

Ordyne  Namco1989
[100]***
[49]***
[33]***
[52]***Good horizontal shoot 'em up game. Graphically not on par with the arcade version, but still a color- and beautiful game. The enemy design often reminded me of [game=#10618]Fantasy Zone[/game]. Sometimes I wished the own ship would move a bit faster, on the other hand with the right extra weapon (which can be bought from flying shops) some bosses were much too easy to beat.***Ordyne is a port of the popular side-scrolling arcade shooter that includes simultaneous two-player co-op play as well as impressive visuals and catchy background music. The evil Kubota has kidnapped Dr. Tomari's fiancee, Kana, and taken the colossal nuclear reactor Ordyne. In order to reclaim them, Dr. Tomari and his assistant Felix take to their battleships and head off in pursuit. Avoid enemies and advance through seven different levels that take place on land, sea, and air. Collect crystals from defeated enemies and use them to buy items or upgrades for your ship at the Space Inn. Do you have what it takes to defeat the boss at the end of each level and ultimately reach Kubota in the final stage, Kubota World?

Altered Beast  NEC Avenue (Bits Laboratory)1989Zeus has called upon you! Only a brave and fearless warrior can save his beloved daughter, Athena, from the cunning clutches of Nelf, evil Lord of the Underworld. Risen from the grave, you are presented with supernatural powers beyond this world. Collect the mystical spirit balls and transform into an awesome array of creatures - as Strongman, punch and kick harder than ever before, as WereWolf and WereTiger, rip the flesh of the demons of hell, and as Bear, knock out your enemies with one bad breath! You hear the distant cries of the beautiful Athena and as the terrors of the Underworld tighten their grasp, the beast within you rises to face the final battle!***
[1]***Didn't like the Mega Drive version very much, so my expectations for the PC-Engine version were quite low, but the end result was even worse than I thought. The slow scrolling and mostly slow and unresponsive movements of your character, especially when in human form make the game dull and frustrating.
labelimagesubject
Doraemon Meikyu Daisakusen  Hudson Soft1989Cratermaze is a comical action game set in a parallel world. While on a trip through time, you and your friends are confronted by Kublai, henchman to the evil Zenzombie. He traps your friends at separate points in the space-time continuum. Now you must fight your way through 60 rounds of mazes to save your friends. Dinosaurs, ninjas, robots and other enemies lurk within the mazes, spanning from primitive times to the future. Escape the enemies by digging holes to trap them in and then filling the holes to finish them off.***
[52]***The game is based on some rather unknown arcade game "Kid no Hore Hore Daisakusen", which is also known in the west under the name "Booby Kids" due to the so titled NES port. For the Japanese PC-Engine version they replaced the original characters with Doraemon and his friends. The US version named Cratermaze on the other hand features the original characters from the arcade version. Besides the character exchange both versions have different music and instead of treasure chests, Doraemon has to pick up pies. The gameplay consists of searching all of the said treasure chests or pies, so that a key spawns which opens the exit door of the maze. The controls are good, the graphics and sound are average but thats ok for this kind of game. After about ten rounds or so the game becomes rather monotonous though, because the half dozen graphical sets begin to repeat constantly and you have seen all gameplay elements and extras.

Shinobi  Asmik (Dual)1989
[49]***
[62]***
[33]***Shinobi. It's Japanese for stealth, the perfect description of a Master Ninja. And that's exactly what you are! Armed with throwing stars and finely-honed battle skills, you must defeat the Ring of Five. Fight your way past mercenaries and karate thugs. Take out the meanest martial artists and rescue hostages. But these dangers pale in comparison to your ultimate challenge: A fight to the death against five evil Ninja Assassins whose mastery of the deadly ancient arts may well surpass your own!***Good conversion of Sega's arcade version of Shinobi and maybe the best home version. One of the five arcade levels is missing, but playability, graphics and music are good - much better than [game=#5414]Ninja Warriors[/game] for example. Shinobi plays also quite different from other Ninja games, because you do not punch, kick or kill your enemies with a blade, but only use shuriken as weapon. This makes Shinobi more a shooting game, but in a typical beat'em up level setting.***

[1]***
[52]***What Mario on Nintendo consoles and Sonic on Sega consoles is Bonk for the PC-Engine. A highly playable and enjoyable platform game. And in contrast to the other two famous mascots, Bonk is funny, really funny. Eating vegetables restores some health, eating meat however lets him go berserk and he becomes invincible for a short period of time. Otherwise he uses his strong head against his enemies. Bonk's animations are really, well I mentioned it... funny. The start of a great series.

[52]***This game has an incredibly hard difficulty level. Especially the first level is one of the hardest starting levels I have ever seen. And the fact that you lose all your extra firepower after dying makes it even worse. Well, so it might be best you find a way to cheat so that you can enjoy some nice enemy designs, boss fights and music.***This game is pretty standard run of the mill stuff, the graphics and music are ok but its a bit bland, the only saviour is its rock hardness! its virtually impossible to restart once you lose your firepower, also you have to finish it twice round, and the endings naff anyway!

[33]***
[1]***
[52]***Strange enough this game never made it outside of Japan, but maybe that is for the better because the game is not really good. Strange controls and graphics that are not on par with other PC-Engine games. The gameplay resembles that of [game=#4219]Road Blasters[/game]. Besides getting to the goal in the given amount of time, you have to shoot other cars which are in your way and avoid their shots or attacks from airplanes. After each of the six stages there is a little boss battle. Noteworthy is the ridiculous Japanese voice of K.I.T.T. in the few cutscenes between the stages.

Volfied  Taito (ITL)1989A very playable modern Qix clone which features 40 levels. Darius Alpha  NEC (Bits Laboratory)1990Darius Alpha was offered to those who had bought both the PC Engine and CD-ROM² versions of Darius Plus/Super Darius. It is essentially just a run of bosses found in that game, as opposed to a fully fledged Darius release. Only around 800 copies were ever produced. Atomic Robo-Kid Special  UPL1990Atomic Robo-Kid Special is some kind of explorative shooter like [game=#10746]Mr. Heli[/game]. Graphics are well done for the most time and controls are good. The first levels are motivating, but after you are beyond the first few from the 25 total levels you see that the gameplay elements and level graphics repeat themselves quite often. The music is also in the weak side. In total its an above average "different" shooter, but not one of the prime shmups for the PC-Engine. labelimageminimize

[52]***
[37]***The graphics are fast indeed and look good on screenshots. Actually the game is moving with such an unreal speed, it ruins the gameplay. Controls are bad as is the collision detection. Because of that the game is rather difficult although it only has six very short levels. The music and sound effects are also rather weak. An overall disappointing arcade conversion.***This is a different style of racing game in which you attempt to catch criminals by chasing them and ramming their cars off the road. Playing as two cops from the NYPD special "CHASE H.Q." unit, the first half of each stage involves you maneuvering your unmarked car in a heated chase, followed by an action sequence in the latter half. Once you reach the target vehicle, you flip on your lights and siren, and then try to stop the culprits by repeatedly colliding with them. Use your different gears wisely as you make your way through streets and around corners, and be careful not to hit objects or other cars, or you'll lose speed. Also at your disposal are turbo units for temporary extra speed and ramming power.

Blodia  Hudson Soft1990Blodia is a nice little puzzle game for the PC-Engine, with a similar concept as the more well known Pipe Dream. It is actually based on an older more or less completely unknown homecomputer game "Diablo" however. I found Blodia to be too difficult and stressful from the very beginning to be actually fun. But I guess when you have bought this game for much money back in the day and put some effort in it to dig into the mechanics and tricks, it could provide many hours of puzzle fun.***Get wrapped up in this mind-bending game that will test your mental agility. The action seems simple - just keep a ball rolling through a winding maze by shifting around pieces of tubing. But the action is intense! Psychosis  Naxat;NEC Interchannel (Dual)1990This is a side-scrolling shooter played in a world created from the mind of a twisted demon. Your soul has suddenly wandered into that evil world that exists in every person's heart. The only way out is to blast your way past the grotesque creatures that block your path in five "causes" (stages).
